New Twestival media page

Posted on: 23 January 2009 at 1415 - Comment

The new version 1.2.1 of the twestival-2009 theme includes header navigation for all city sites.

As well as linking to this site, the navigation also currently includes a link to the new media page, which lists downloads for the media and websites - hopefully it will be useful to city teams in publicising Twestival.

The font used in the Twestival logo

A number of city site admins have asked me what font is used in the Twestival logo, designed by 383 Project, so they can produce their own event graphics.

The answer is: Coppepan.

City sites: 96 and counting

Posted on: 20 January 2009 at 1412 - Comment

96 city sites have so far been registered on the Twestival WordPress MU system.

Any city taking part in Twestival can have their own site if they provide the email address of an admin for their domain.

Admins must be familiar with the WordPress Administration Panels.

City sites will be linked from the Twestival home page when admins tell me when their first post has been made.

More on city sponsor logos and links

Further to the previous post, Damien Austin-Walker, city site admin for London, has provided further guidance using text widgets for sponsor logos and links:

  • Be aware the maximum width of content in the sidebar is 240px.
  • Upload logos to the media library via an unpublished post.
  • Use <ul> to contain logos and links.
  • Example code:
    1
    2
    3
    4
    5
    6
    7
    8

    <ul class="xoxo">
    <li>
    <ul class="sponsors">
    <li><h3>London Sponsors</h3></li>
    <li><a href="http://tweetminster.co.uk" title="Tweetminster"><img src="http://london.twestival.com/files/2009/01/tweetminsteravatar.png"></a></li>
    ....
    ....
    ....

A page template has been added to the new version 1.2 of the twestival-2009 theme.

When writing a page select the page-template template to apply the city site styling.

Donate link added

A donate link, to a special Twestival page on the charity: water site, has been added to the twestival-2009 template.

Under the current CSS styling, this appears as a green button at the top right hand side on all city sites.

How to add venue details

Posted on: 19 January 2009 at 1601 - Comment

The second line of city site headers is initially set to ‘12 February 2009, venue to be announced’.

To replace the text after the comma with details of local event venues, admins should send me details of:

  • Start time of the event
  • Name of venue along with link to related site (if available)
  • Postal address of venue with link to map
  • Postal code of venue
  • Your city site url

Please present the venue information in the following format, by replacing the square brackets and contained text with your details:

1
[start-time-24-hour-format-HH:mm], <a href="[venue-url-if-avialable]">[venue-name]</a>, <a href="[map-url]">[first-line-of-address]</a>, [rest-of-address-comma-seperated] [postal-code]

Here’s an example of correctly formatted venue details from the London city site:

19:00, <a href="http://www.shoreditchstudios.com/">Shoreditch Studios</a>, <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=london+Reliance+Square&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=30.461748,56.601563&ie=UTF8&ll=51.526047,-0.078578&spn=0.011668,0.027637&z=15&iwloc=addr">Reliance Square</a> (off New Inn Yard), London EC2A 3AR

This will be a time saver as I will be able to copy and paste venue info into the system at my end.

Also note the first line of the header is fixed to a standard format for all sites of: city name and country name (in English) followed by ‘Twestival 2009′. Due to time constraints this cannot be changed, other than to correct errors - for example spelling.

Video plugin now available

Posted on: at 0835 - Comment

The WordPress Video Plugin has been added to the plugins available to city site admins:

It is stongly recommended Askiment is activated to protect against spam - activation must be carried out by site admins.

WP-PageNavi and WP-RelativeDate are automatically activated for all city sites - deactivating these plugins will break the twestival-2009 theme - so don’t do it!

Spam on Twestival city sites

Posted on: 18 January 2009 at 1237 - Comment

Now that comments are available, it is recommended city site admins install Askimet, which is available from the list of standard plugins provided to all sites.

Admins need to activate Askiment themselves for their own site, along with obtaining a WordPress.com API key to enable the plugin.

Admins are responsible for monitoring comments for their own sites, in particular to stop spam being posted.

Comments now on Twestival

Version 1.1 of the Twestival theme has been released with support for comments.

Comments were not included in the original release due to the fast pace of development.

This comments facility has had very limited testing, so could site admins provide feedback to me if they encounter problems.

Thanks to the generosity of EF/AVHHF all donations and ticket sales are being matched through March 25 up to $100,000.
